An opportunity to see inside the Queen’s London home

BuckinghamPalace

Buckingham Palace is one of the most photographed and iconic buildings in London.  As a working palace, it is not possible for tourists to go inside for much of the year.  The exception comes in the summer. When the Queen is on holiday, Buckingham Palace opens its doors to guided tours of the State Rooms. But you do need to book your stay at Mowbray Court Hotel quickly as each tour has only a limited number of spaces available.

Walking across the famous entrance courtyard, visitors ascend the Grand staircase just like the thousands of people who attend the many state events and ceremonial occasions held here throughout the year.  The State Rooms are where the Queen meets ambassadors and dignitaries from all over the world, undertaking investitures, ceremonial events, and state banquets. During the guided tours, tables are laid out with silver and porcelain just as they would appear to participants on those grand occasions.

During the special summer tours, tourists are guided through a total of 19 State Rooms including the massive Ballroom, the White Drawing Room, and the Throne Room.  Many of these rooms will be instantly recognizable from countless official photographs taken at events like Royal Weddings and Christenings. The famous wedding photographs of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were taken in the Throne Room.

The guided tours offer a wonderful opportunity to see some spectacular artworks not normally on public view.  The Royal Collection is one of the greatest art collections in the world and contains masterpieces by virtually every pre-eminent artist and sculptor.  It has a superb collection of Faberge and objects d’art, many of which can be seen displayed on occasional tables throughout the State Rooms.  The walls, needless to say, are adorned with priceless artworks by the likes of Canaletto, Rubens, Rembrandt, Titian and Van Dyke.

Buckingham Palace Tour

This summer there will also be an extra display specially chosen by the Prince of Wales, highlighting some of the more unusual items within the Royal Collection. Typical of these items is a magnificent cloak which was originally owned by Napoleon Bonaparte. The cloak was found in his carriage following the Battle of Waterloo and was presented as a souvenir to the future George IV.

Don’t forget to take the opportunity while searching for budget Hotels in Central London, to explore the wonderful gardens. These are one of the hidden gardens of London, a green oasis among the busy streets.  Hidden away behind the brick walls surrounding the palace are expansive lawns, a lake, flower beds and lots of trees.

While in the area, you can also opt for a visit to the Royal Mews.  This is where the Queen’s collection of carriages and carriage horses can be found.  All of the carriages are in constant use during events such as Ascot, at royal weddings and royal occasions such as the State Opening of Parliament.

Gin Festival London Summer 2018

Gin Festival London Summer 2018

Gin has become fashionable again and London is definitely the place to find the latest variations.  Its traditional Gin Palaces have reawakened, and are attracting huge crowds. But trying to find the best places to enjoy a really good Gin and Tonic doesn’t mean the nearest pub.  For those in the know, there are some fantastic places to stay such as Mowbray Court Hotel Kensington from where you can visit various Gin Parlours that offer an incomparable gin experience.

Mr. Fogg’s Gin Parlour, Covent Garden

Possibly one of the all-time best, and certainly the most quirky, is Mr. Fogg’s Gin Parlour.  Anyone familiar with Jules Verne’s classic novel, Around the World in 80 Days, will immediately recognize the references as they enter the pub since this is based around the character and storyline of Mr. Phineas Fogg.  The bar actually describes itself as ‘the gin parlor of the eccentric British adventurer’ and has a distinctly Victorian atmosphere. There are austere photographs on the walls, and thick curtains drape the windows. Take a close look at the bar – it is a bit unusual as it contains numerous drawers of varying sizes.  As to the gin – you are spoilt for choice as over 300 variations are on offer.

City of London Distillery (C.O.L.D) Blackfriars

Move forward in time to the American Prohibition with its Speakeasy style when you stop for a drink at the City of London Distillery.  Gin bubbles away in huge copper containers beside the bar and you can even distill your own personal bottle to take home.  Just ask to visit the Gin Lab where you can create your own personal recipe, but before that you must check out for accommodation Earls Court London and experience various Gin events to the fullest.

The Gin Bar High Holborn

You need to take your time choosing at this venue, as there are over 500 different gins and 30 tonics available.  The result is over 14,000 possible combinations of flavors and styles not counting the innumerable gin cocktails also on offer!  Fortunately, the bar staff is knowledgeable and helpful in whittling down the choices to suit your personal taste.  Stylish and sophisticated, it is an extremely popular venue.

The Gin Palace at the Strand Hotel

This is an elegant cocktail bar offering over 30 gins in addition to a good range of cocktails. Worth considering is the unusual Gin & Tea – the bar’s original take on the idea of afternoon tea.  Expect a classic afternoon tea, with a gin cocktail twist!

Explore London by Bus

Explore London by bus

If time is short, then sightseeing by bus is an ideal option.  You can hop on, enjoy sights, listen to the commentary and hop off at any part of the route, rejoining the bus whenever you like.  It is a great way to get around London, see as many places as possible and visit those places you really want to see close up.

There are several open-top bus tours available. Typical operators include the London Sightseeing Bus Tours, Golden Buses, and Big Bus Tours.  Tickets are valid only on buses operated by a specific company. You cannot just jump on anyone along the route. If you have come to explore London, then you would be searching for the affordable hotels like Mowbray Court Hotel which will serve you the best services with the amazing offers.

All the buses offer a guided commentary that can be accessed via special earphones. This commentary will tell you all about the places you are seeing, as well as background stories about London and its history.  You can choose which language to listen to, as these audio guides are available in most major languages including Mandarin, Russian, German and French. Tickets are valid for 24 hours, starting from the moment you first use the ticket.  Some companies offer longer periods so check the details carefully before buying.

The big advantage of these buses is that you can hop on and hop off at any point along the route.  If you want, you can stay on the bus for the entire trip, then go round again stopping wherever you like.  It offers a lot of flexibility to create your perfect sightseeing day. And don’t forget the photo opportunities. Head upstairs to enjoy the best views of iconic buildings like Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London.

Routes offered by each operator tend to be very similar, but with slight variations.  For example, the London Bus Sightseeing Tour offers access to several routes which you can mix and match as you please.  So if you are looking to visit Madame Tussauds, you should aim for the Orange Route.  You can then head for the Red Route to explore the area around the British Museum.  It is important to check out all the different options and find out which one is right for you. While travelling to different popular attractions of the city, you need someplace where you can have comfortable stay by hunting for the accommodation in Kensington London.

There also tours which offer something just that bit different such as tours that explore the history of the Beatles and 1960’s music.  While those interested in the darker side of London should not miss the distinctive Ghost bus tour with its creepy tales of ghosts, witches, and ghoulies!

Love Monet’s art: See an unmissable exhibition at The National Gallery

Monet’s art

Who can resist the beauty of Monet? His lyrical paintings, especially the stunning Waterlily series are a delight to the eyes.  He was one of the greatest of all Impressionist painters, recognized and admired for his skill during his own lifetime.  When you think of Monet, it is those of those beautiful scenes of flowers from his garden at Giverny that immediately come to mind.  In setting up this latest exhibition of his work, the National Gallery has taken a different approach. Instead of focusing on flowers and scenery, the emphasis is on buildings and the way he approached architectural settings such as cityscapes.

The exhibition contains a rare opportunity to see examples of Monet’s art drawn from art galleries all over the world. There are over 75 paintings on display, dealing with all kinds of buildings from mills to churches, cathedrals to palaces.  Book your stay at Mowbray Court Hotel London so that you can see numerous drawings of Monet while you visit the National Gallery.

Many of the paintings reflect his stay in London. He came to London at the turn of the twentieth century and stayed in the Savoy Hotel. From his room, he could see views across the river and of the Houses of Parliament.  Initially, it did not impress him. He wrote ‘London would be quite ugly if it were not for the fog.’

But as soon as he started painting, he was inspired by the luminous quality of the fog, the architectural nature of the immense bridges and buildings that surrounded him.

The exhibition covers three distinct stages of his work covering his entire career. The earliest work on display dates from 1863 and shows a sixteenth-century house in Honfleur. The first part of the exhibition deals with The Village and the Picturesque, focusing mainly on scenes within France which he encountered during his travels.  This includes views of Rouen Cathedral and various Norman churches.  The second section concentrates on The City and the Modern, while the third section deals with The Monument and the Mysterious both of which include works created on his travels around London and Italy especially Venice.  One of the loveliest of these paintings is of the Doges Palace, with its myriad reflections in the water. If you are interested visiting various other art museums, you should check out for accommodation Earls Court London.

Monet & Architecture is at the National Gallery until July 29.  Tickets need to be pre-booked as this is proving to be a very popular exhibition.

Sparkling, colorful, creative – jewelry makes a perfect gift, especially since it takes up very little space in your luggage. Wherever you are in London, there is a massive array of choice at every price point when you are seeking some pretty jewelry to buy.  All you need to know is where to go.

London’s Mayfair is definitely the best place to start looking for a designer, high quality, expensive jewelry.  It is home to many of the top specialist stores such as Asprey of New Bond Street. Such jewelers have a long history of providing exquisite jewelry for discerning customers. Some companies have been established here for centuries.  Aspreys, for example, has been trading in Mayfair for over two hundred years and include royalty among its regular customers.

Perhaps you are looking for something more antique, something with a history? Then take a look at stores such as the Antique Jewellery Company in Davies Street or the showrooms of Sothebys and Christies, both of which hold regular auctions of vintage and antique jewelry. London hotels are a great option to book your stay and visit various jewelry stores in the city.

Swarovski and other types of costume jewelry can be found in stores throughout the West End and major shopping streets like Kensington High Street, Knightsbridge, Regent Street, Covent Garden and Seven Dials.  Apart from specialist stores, most department stores like Selfridges, Liberty, John Lewis will have a wide selection on offer.

Alternatively, you can follow in the footsteps of Londoners who head for the streets around Hatton Garden and Holborn.  For centuries this has been the center of the jewelry and diamond trade. Even today, there are over 90 jewelers shops and associated businesses in the area.  This is where Londoners go if you want something different, something handmade, something unique or are looking for a bespoke piece. Just a cursory look at the windows of the various shops will reveal the vast range of designs and styles on offer, and the staff is very happy to help you find exactly what you want.

Also in Holborn is the London Silver Vaults.  This is a shopping destination which is all too frequently overlooked, simply because many people do not realize it is there. They can actually walk past the door without being aware of the treasures that lie within. Mowbray Court Hotel Kensington is close proximity to Mayfair which is the perfect place to buy expensive jewelry.

The Silver Vaults are located close to Chancery Lane tube station. Big doors open on a long flight of stairs heading downwards into underground vaults. Nowadays, the combined shops situated within the Vaults contain one of the largest collections of jewelry and silverware, particularly antique silver, to be found anywhere in the world.

Picasso 1932 – Love, Fame, Tragedy

Picasso 1932 – Love, Fame, Tragedy

An amazing array of works by one of the artistic giants of the twentieth century can be seen in London throughout the spring and summer.  Tate Bankside is holding a superb exhibition on Pablo Picasso – marking a rare solo look at his work within a pivotal year of his life.

Picasso 1932 – Love, Fame, Tragedy’ is set to be one of the most popular modern art exhibitions to be ever held in London. Recognised worldwide as an artistic genius, Picasso had an immense impact on modern art.  1932 proved to be a key year in his personal life and artistic development describing it as “A Year of Wonders’.    Already a renowned artist, his work was highly sought after.  1932 was a year when he created some of his most famous works, exploring and pushing the boundaries in a variety of artistic mediums.  It was also a time when his personal life underwent a transformation. Although he was a proud father and husband, he met a woman many years his junior with whom he embarked on a passionate love affair that can be seen clearly in his many paintings and drawings.  In just five days in March 1932, he created three stunning portraits of his lover, Marie-Therese Walter.  Until now, these portraits have never been seen together again.  This exhibition brings them together allowing visitors to see the development of his portraiture, and gain insights into his relationship with Marie-Therese.  You will love to stay at Mowbray Court Hotel Kensington and visit this event that has already started from 8 March and will continue until 9 September 2018.

“Picasso famously described painting as ‘just another form of keeping a diary’.  This exhibition will invite you to get close to the artist, to his ways of thinking and working, and to the tribulations of his personal life at a pivotal moment in his career,” comments the exhibition curator Achim Borchardt-Hume.

Over 100 works of art together with rarely seen personal photographs will be on display in the exhibition.  Many of these paintings are rarely lent out to exhibitions so it presents an opportunity to see works of art owned by collectors and museums all over the world.  Typical of these artworks are La Reve (The Dream) which has never been on display in the UK before, while La Jeune Fille Devant Un Miroir (Girl before a mirror) rarely leaves its home in the Museum of Modern Art. Search for accommodation in Kensington London so that you can have a sneak peek at more artworks.

Finding your way to the Tate Bankside is easy – all you have to do is walk across the bridge from below St Paul’s Cathedral or walk along the Thames riverside from the Southbank Centre and London Eye.

Taste of Delicious Chinese food in London

Taste of Delicious Chinese food in London

Chinese food is one of the most popular ethnic foods in London, and there is a great selection of restaurants if you know where to go. We highlight some of the best.

Hunan in Pimlico Road, Belgravia is definitely one of the top Chinese restaurants in London.  From the moment you walk in, you are made to feel special.  Expect lots of questions from the staff – how spicy do you like your food? Are you very hungry? Is there anything you prefer or cannot eat? They are really keen to personalize your visit – and provide just the food you want.  Make your choice from the menu and then sit back and prepare for a feast.  Your food will arrive in steady waves, starting with small helpings and building up to steadily bigger ones.  If you are a die hard foodaholic, you must go for accommodation Earls Court London to book your stay and taste various Chinese cuisines.

Also worth considering is Royal China in Baker Street.  Although a big restaurant, it has an intimate atmosphere and is well known for its Dim Sum made daily by specialist chefs.  Service is quick and very efficient.

Prefer something more trendy? Then the Duck & Rice in Berwick Street, Soho may be your ideal location.  A combination of restaurant and pub, it is well known for its trendy approach to Chinese food.  Typical offerings include venison puffs, chicken in black bean sauce, Jasmin smoked pork ribs and Lobster Cantonese. This is a good place to come if you want a beer with your meal.  All around the walls are large copper tanks containing freshly brewed beer.  They even do a good line in beer cocktails for diners wanting to try something a little different.

Anyone who likes hot, spicy food should head for Barshu in Frith Street, Soho.  Cusine here is based on Sichuan styles and is definitely hot.  The restaurant is renowned for its fiery, numbing flavors and you will certainly need lots of tea to counteract the heat.   Pretty carved screens and red lanterns add a lovely touch of color to the décor.  Stay at Mowbray Court Hotel Kensington to visit various food sites in London

Not far away are two other very good Chinese restaurants.  Four Seasons has been established on Gerrard Street for over two decades and is a specialist in meat dishes.  Roasted meats form a key part of the menu, with particular emphasis on siew yoke (crispy belly pork), barbequed pork and crispy duck.  The menu is massive, covering 20 pages so is guaranteed to provide something to please every diner.

The Near Jen Café in Newport Place is perfect if you want tea and snack.  It serves a wide range of teas from Hong Kong and Taiwan, as well as countless varieties of dumplings.  It is quite fun to watch the dumplings being made and filled with meat or vegetables before your eyes by the on-site chefs.

Royal China in Baker Street specializes in dim sum and offers a vast range of fillings and styles.  Each dim sum is made daily by specialist chefs, and service is very quick so you do not have to wait long for your meal.
