The summer festival season might have come to an end with its obligatory August bank holiday blowout, but that doesn’t mean London is lowering the music volume anytime soon. In fact, many artists are dusting themselves down from a summer on the festival circuit, and heading out on solo tours.
There are some incredible shows taking place in the capital throughout September, from arena-rock titans to West African dance icons.
From 80s guitar heroes to once-banned rappers, these are the gigs you need to know about.
ANDREYA TRIANA - 17 SEPT
The acclaimed soul-jazz singer, also known for her work with downtempo dance dude Bonobo and LA hip hop beatmaker Flying Lotus, plays a hometown show at Hackney’s fab new arts and music venue. It should be pretty dreamy.
Location: EartH (Evolutionary Arts Hackney)
Time: 12:00am
KHALID – 17 SEPT
The Texan R&B wunderkind swings into town for an arena show in support of this year’s ‘Free Spirit’ album. Support comes from local pop queens Mabel (‘Don’t Call Me Up’) and Raye (‘You Don’t Know Me’), so this is a tasty night all round.
Location: The O2
Time: 12:00am
Julia Michaels – 17 SEPT
This US singer-songwriter is a serious talent: she’s written hits for Shawn Mendes, Selena Gomez and Britney Spears, and scored a couple of big ones of her own with ‘Issues’ and Clean Bandit collab ‘I Miss You’. Catch her showing off her quirky pop chops at this mid-sized headline gig.
Location: O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire
Time: 12:00am
TYLER, THE CREATOR - 16, 17, 18 SEPT
No longer banned from these shores, Tyler, The Creator is celebrating in a big way with three headline shows in Brixton.
Pixies – 20 SEPT
More than 30 years on since Pixies revolutionised American rock music, they’re still going with their enthralling live shows.
Location: O2 Academy Brixton
Time: 7:00pm
HOSPITALITY IN THE PARK – 21 SEPT
Heavyweight D&B shaking Finsbury Park
The hefty dance party organised by south London drum and bass label Hospital Records returns to Finsbury Park for a fourth year. Surprisingly enough, D&B is set to be the main focus. Although the line-up is yet to be announced, expect a carefully chosen collection of old-school masters, big-hitting names and newer blood. One for the party-heads.
Location: Finsbury Park
Time: 12:00am
ORCHESTRA UNWRAPPED – 26 SEPT
The BBC Concert Orchestra teams up with conductor Alice Farnham and Tom Service, presenter of BBC Radio 3’s The Listening Service, to explore the multi-faceted role of an orchestra in the 21st century.
Audience members help to recreate the lively spirit of the first performance of Mozart’s Symphony No. 31 – concert halls were much noisier environments in the 19th century! Tom Service leads the BBC Concert Orchestra through orchestral experimentation of past eras to some of the most recognisable and emotive pieces of film music from Harry Potter, Jaws and Psycho.
Exploring the function of an orchestra includes ceremonial purposes, practical uses in the pit, as well as some theme tunes and symbols of national unity thrown in along the way.
This concert’s colourful variety shows that the orchestral line-up is still evolving and its role ever changing.
Location: Queen Elizabeth Hall
Time: 7:30pm
